Sage

Info

Age: 8
Sex: Gelding
Height: 15.2hh
Organisation: HAPPA

Sage is a beautiful dark bay gelding, born on 16th August 2018, standing at 15.2hh and of Thoroughbred x Welsh breeding. He came to HAPPA in March 2023 after a sanctuary closed, arriving full of life and ready for a fresh start.

Not long after arriving, Sage sadly sustained a serious injury in the field, damaging his medial sesamoid bone and suspensory branch. With urgent veterinary care and months of rehabilitation, he made good progress, and hopes were high for him to become a ridden horse. However, in June 2025, further scans revealed the extent of his old injury, and it was confirmed that Sage would not be suitable for a ridden career.

Despite this, Sage has shown resilience, brightness and plenty of character. He is sound enough to enjoy a happy and comfortable life as a much-loved companion horse, which is exactly what we are now looking for, his forever home.

Sage’s Personality and What He’s Looking For…

Sage is a young horse full of character, curiosity and energy. He thrives on a routine and can live in or out, so long as he has consistency and the company of equine friends. He is happiest in a herd, either with geldings or mares and loves the social side of horse life.

Sage is sensitive and can sometimes be nervous around new experiences or objects, often seeking reassurance by tucking himself behind you. With patience, kindness and a steady approach, he gains confidence quickly. In the stable, he may pull the odd grumpy face, but once you give him some fuss, he soon softens and becomes your best friend. He adores grooming sessions and the attention of people he trusts.

He has a cheeky side too; he can nibble when irritated, and he’s been known to be a little food-obsessed, likely a result of being starved in his past. However, this is easily managed with understanding and doesn’t overshadow his lovely nature.

Sage is generally excellent for the farrier and vet, requiring no sedation, and although he kicked when he first arrived at HAPPA, he hasn’t shown that behaviour in almost two years. He can be a little wary of confined spaces such as wash bays, and he prefers baths to be kept short and sweet. He may also be unsure of new rugs at first, but once on, he relaxes.

What Sage needs most is a safe, caring home where he can be treasured for who he is, not what he can do. He will make a loyal, loving and characterful companion horse for life.
