JOB TITLE: Equine Care Officer, Shores Hey Farm, Briercliffe, Burnley, Lancashire BB10 3QU

DEPARTMENT: Equine Welfare, accountable to Equine Manager (ERRM) and Equine Care Supervisors (ECS)

WORKING HOURS: Full-Time Position 42.5 hours per week, Part-Time Position 18 hours to 25.5 hours per week By Rota Basis Occasional Stable Yard Night Checks 8.30 pm – 9 pm

SALARY: Starting at national minimum wage with annual increments and long service after three years, and pay rise with a qualification BHS stage 2. All Equine Care Team members can complete their BHS Stage 1 and 2 Qualifications after confirmation in post.

Overall purpose of job
To provide high-quality care to resident equines under the guidance of the Equine Rehabilitation and Rehoming Manager with sufficient knowledge and understanding of the specific needs of equines on a rehabilitation programme. An experienced equine handler with sound stable management skills and the ability to communicate confidently and work closely and supportively with other work colleagues and the general public.

Principal responsibilities
Equine Care and Rehabilitation

  • feed, muck out and bed down equines
  • exercise and socialise equines
  • offer support to the Equine Manager and Equine Care Supervisors in creating varied programmes for all equines at the Centre.
    participate in learning delivered by the Senior Team
  • progress allocated equines through rehabilitation plans and training plans
  • give feedback on how the rehabilitation process is going with allocated equines
  • service the HAPPA isolation facility as a member of the isolation team if allocated
  • assist the vet, farrier or dental technician if required to do so.
  • assist in the euthanasia process.
  • help maintain a clean and safe environment for equines, staff and visitors to the Centre.
